Arafat, Mubarak meet as mediators, seek to end Mideast fighting

Sharm el-Sheik -- President Hosni Mubarak, who will host an Israeli-Palestinian summit today, held a secret meeting with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in this Egyptian resort Saturday morning. Presidential sources said on condition of anonymity the meeting came before U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's announcement that Arafat agreed to attend the summit with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak to try to end weeks of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Details were not released from the Arafat-Mubarak talks at Sharm el-Sheik, the resort on the Red Sea near the Israeli border where the summit was expected to be held.

Ninety passengers walked safely from a hijacked Saudi airliner at Baghdad airport as Iraqi security forces arrested the hijackers who had threatened to blow up the plane.
